Dishonest Review: The Promised Neverland 2nd Season

The 2021 Winter Anime Season was extremely stacked. It gave us gems such as Scar on the Praeter, EX-ARM, and Yashahime. On the other hand, it also gave us a couple of stinkers like Attack on Titan: The Final Season and the second season of Re:Zero. You win some, you lose some. Overall, this season was amazing. In my opinion, there was one anime this season that stood head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. It was a show so bad good, that anime fans are still talking about it today! I know what you're thinking - what terrible amazing show generated such a buzz this season!? That would be none other than the much-anticipated second season of The Promised Neverland

Disclaimer/Warning: I take no responsibility whatsoever in the event you read the following review and get HYPED for this show...only to be severely disappointed when you actually watch it. Am I being serious? Am I kidding? Who knows? That's half the fun! There may be spoilers. And coarse language, probably. Maybe lewd stuff/images. Continue at your own risk. You have been warned!

The world wasn't ready for this journey.

It's safe to assume that The Promised Neverland 2nd Season was one of the shows that anime fans were most looking forward to this season. With lots of hype comes the risk of major disappointment. Did The Promised Neverland deliver? You betcha! I'm not going to lie, I was nervous at first. The first three episodes of the second season weren't the best. In fact, they were probably some of the worst episodes I've ever seen. For some reason, a couple of disillusioned fans actually thought that these were the best episodes of the season. Clearly, they haven't watched enough anime to formulate valid opinions. I bet this was like one of ten anime they've ever seen in their lives. At the end of the day, who's opinion are you going to trust? A bunch of anime babies or me, an anime connoisseur who has watched over 3,000 shows? That's what I thought.

Anyway, yeah, the first three episodes suck. I don't care about Emma, Ray, or those annoying children. I don't care about some friendly demons telling us about the world. I want to see humans and demons fight each other, dangit! I don't want to see humans and demons become friends. This is not what I signed up for. Where are the good ol' fashioned shounen battles!? Sigh, if only Norman was alive. Wait, he is!? He's not dead!?!? Okay, we're back in business!

Stand back, we got a badass over here!

By the way, I totally knew Norman was alive the whole time. I have never read the manga read the manga to completion. I knew what to expect. And honestly, I wasn't looking forward to the next arc. The Goldy Pond arc is easily the worst arc of The Promised Neverland. Heck, I've already forgotten what it was about! It was so bad that I've blocked it out of my mind. That's probably for the best. I'm pretty sure nothing cool happened in that arc and no important characters were introduced. But anyway, back to the anime! Just when I had lost faith in it, The Promised Neverland pulled a power move. The anime decided to cut the Goldy Pond arc! I'm usually against anime-only content but I think Studio CloverWorks made the right call here. They listened to the fans and gave them what they wanted. And the result? The worst best anime of the season!

As I've already made clear, I am not a fan of Emma or Ray. They are terrible characters. Norman, on the other hand, is a fantastic character. He knows that humans and demons can never be friends. Did they forget that demons EAT people? Why would they ever want to be friends with them!? I know I wouldn't. The demons have to die. All of them. No mercy! He's even got a ragtag group of kids with him that share his vision. Unlike Emma's group, these kids are smart. They know what has to be done.

You gotta do, what ya gotta do.

At this point, a few fans questioned how Norman turned out the way that he did. They wanted to know what happened in that year he was separated from Emma and Ray. Who freaking cares!? It's not important. I, for one, am extremely thankful that the anime didn't make us sit through multiple episodes of pointless backstory. Do you really want to know what happened? Norman became a man, that's what happened. Less talk, more demon-slaying. And that's exactly what Norman did. It was so satisfying seeing Norman burn down that demon village. What did Emma and Ray do in a year? Nothing, that's what! Finally, those evil monsters were getting what they deserved. Sweet, sweet revenge!

Of course, Emma goes and f**ks everything up as she usually does. What a terrible character. If I'm being honest, everything that happens after this is kind of a blur. But I'm pretty sure that Norman fixed everything and everyone lived happily ever after. If I recall correctly, the last scene in the anime was everyone hugging each other in a world where there are no demons. Clearly, Norman and his group must have annihilated all of the demons. Mission accomplished! Norman, you the real MVP.

All's well that ends well.

The Promised Neverland 2nd Season was certainly an experience. It deserves major props. It went from being the worst anime of the season after three episodes to being the best anime of the season once it was all said and done. I don't think I've ever seen such an amazing turnaround! Well done, CloverWorks. I'm sure that Kaiu Shirai f**king hates you is proud of the adaptation. Everyone was laughing at The Promised Neverland when the season began. No one is laughing now. The Promised Neverland should be remembered as a great example of what the anime industry is capable of. Source material? Forget about it! Give me more anime original content like The Promised Neverland

I give The Promised Neverland 2nd Season a perfect 10/10. I hardly ever give out perfect scores but this show deserved it! It was a masterpiece. OH MY GAWDDDDDDDD. THIS SHOW WAS SUCH A DUMPSTER FIRE. HOW DOES AN ANIME BUTCHER THE SOURCE MATERIAL SO BADLY? I HAVEN'T EVEN READ THE MANGA BUT IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN THIS BAD. WHO THE HELL THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA!? DID YOU KNOW THAT KAIU SHIRAI EVEN HAD HIS NAME REMOVED FROM THE ANIME CREDITS? THAT'S HOW BAD THIS SH!T WAS. WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH THAT ENDING? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO RUSH EVERYTHING? MY EYES BURN. I FELT GROSS WRITING THIS. People will be talking about it for years to come, that I can assure you.
